Woohoo – Today is a Fun Day

Michael in DC on Father Son Trip 2011

Michael in DC on Father Son Trip 2011

Wooohooo!  Today is in the top 5 favorite days of the year. It is the day my oldest son, Michael, and I are leaving for our annual father-son-only vacation.

This idea came from an EO colleague who suggested that the best way to build quality relationships with your children is to give them several days of dedicated one-on-one time in a different city, on a vacation designed just for the two of you.  I started it last year when Michael was 5 and we went on a 3 day trip to DC.  It was a blast! He still talks about it and we both took home great memories. It is an amazing time to just be out of the routine, away from distractions, away from the norm of life and only have each other to be with. I learn so much about him, and was so gratified to see him soaking up the world… to see him appreciating and AMAZED with things that I get sick of (escalators, airport trains, bag claims, taxis).

Oh, and STATUES!  The boy is amazed at statues. He wants to sit beside them all and draw them, while I’ve always thought they are neat decorations and probably some tax dollars wasted. But to appreciate statues like Michael gives me a whole new appreciation for life.

So today we are San Diego bound. We will do as much as we can- of course starting out with Legoland, but then on to the San Diego Zoo, and the USS Midway.   Wish us well.

See you next week!

Thanks RG. The trip exceeded both of our expectations. You will love it when Jackson is old enough to do those trips!

Great idea. I just did a trip with my own 5 year old son this summer and I have repeated to many people, that it was the best trip I can remember in a long time. It started out work related because I was making a stop at a customer’s conference in Orlando. But that was just one night. We then spent 2 days in Orlando, one at Disney and one at a water park. Then we went to Clearwater Beach and had 3 days of great fun fishing, riding bikes, watching dolphins, eating ice cream. So good to connect with him in that way.

Awesome Dan… and by the way, thanks for the e-mail with the travel tips for San Diego. You must really be in the destination event business because you nailed it!
